As
promised in the HRM Regional Plan, HRM and Metro Transit are moving
forward on the implementation of a comprehensive & strategic
five-year
transit enhancement plan, which will provide HRM citizens with new,
sustainable transit service options to accommodate the growth of our
region. The Five Year Approach was approved in principle at Regional
Council on April 1, 2008.
The
transit plan includes a new satellite garage, conventional route service
expansion, new Rural Express Service for Hwy. 103, 107 and 118/102
corridors, new downtown shuttle service, rural local bus service,
upgraded farebox technology, transit security, terminal upgrades and
introduction of HarbourLink service from Bedford and surrounding
communities.
Of
particular interest to the residents of District 1 are the Rural Express
Services for the corridors of Hwy 107, which extends from the regional
centre to Preston, Lake Echo, Porters Lake and Musquodoboit Harbour, and
Hwy 118/102, which extends from the regional centre to Fall River,
Halifax International Airport and Enfield. These realistic and
efficiently operated local rural services and “Park & Ride”
options will meet typical trip needs between these communities and
to/from the Urban Core and allow for the possible future introduction of
smaller transportation options to the farther reaches of the Eastern
Shore and Musquodoboit Valley. The development and implementation of all
these services will be advanced strategically
as certain projects are contingent on the completion of others.
